The hole gives you a good grip and allows you to tie it pendant-style. But the
trick with the necklace is to tie it around your wrist while playing; it then becomes available anytime you switch from finger
to pick technique, making it almost impossible to lose.
I also have a keychain leather pocket for those who are really good at losing stuff.
